AIM MIL-STD-1553 PXIe Interface Module
The AIM MIL-STD-1553 (Part Number(s): 788106-03, 788106-02, 788107-03, 788107-02, 788107-01, 788106-01) interface module is a PXI Express avionics data bus card which provides a combination of Bus Controller, Bus Monitor, and Remote Terminal capability on one hardware card. Available in 1 to 4 dual redundant stream configurations, the module has both a single-function (i.e. simulator only) and a full-function (multi-role) mode of operation. In particular, it is able to recreate and physically resend recorded MIL-STD-1553A/B traffic on the actual data bus. This makes it suitable for application in system-level testing, simulation, integration, and validation.
Variants of this functional module are available with differing channel counts and functional modes. For the single function versions of the module; part number 788106-01 has 1 channel, part number 788106-02 has 2 channels, and part number 788106-03 has 4 channels. There is also a full function version of the device; which has part number 788107-01 with 1 channel, part number 788107-02 with 2 channels, and part number 788107-03 with 4 channels. For avionics developers and test engineers, AIM MIL-STD-1553 provides a versatile instrument for protocol simulation, data bus integrity testing, error injection experiments, integration testing, and databus analysis in aerospace, defence, and embedded avionic systems.
The AIM MIL-STD-1553 implements a “Common Core” hardware architecture which utilizes both SoC and FPGA technology for execution in real-time of the bus protocol means on-board, rather than operating under host CPU control. It consists of a very large global memory map to allow for full-bus recording capability, programmable error injection and error detection, IRIG-B time coding for timestamp re-synchronization, and the capability to implement multi-level triggering and advanced capture filtering. Along with bin-bus data handling the AIM MIL-STD-1553 can provide avionics type discrete I/O signal sourcing and sinking (on selected variants) for general hardware in the loop integration with external control logic.
In full-function operation the module is capable of simultaneously performing the activities of Bus Controller, simulating 31 Remote Terminals, whilst monitoring bus traffic in either chronological or mailbox modes. The replay capability allows previously recorded message streams to be replayed over the bus with real time and coherent timing in order to drive real devices under test. In particular, for development and integration of device drivers in the NI ecosystem, AIM provides a Board Support Package and driver support including LabView example VIs for modern Windows environment. In addition, a custom application exists to facilitate the plugging of AIM MIL-STD-1553 modules into NI VeriStand environments, for configuration, message transmit / receive and logging on real-time testing systems.
